What’s the big deal about a little dog waste in our general landfills?
A New Jersey suburb reports that over 5000 pounds of dog waste is deposited each day in their general landfill. In Northern Virginia, a dog population of 11,400 dogs is estimated to contribute a similar amount of solid waste every day and has been identified as a major contributor of bacteria to the Virginia watershed streams.These are just two examples. Dog waste adds over 1.5 billion pounds of waste to our general landfills each year.
Our Health
Dog waste is loaded with bacteria, parasites and viruses that are transmissible to humans as well as to other dogs. Dog waste contains over twenty three million microorganisms per ounce.
Our Waterways
When you curb your dog, the waste is washed directly into storm drains. These drains run untreated into our rivers, lakes and streams. When beaches are closed because of pollution alerts, dog waste is one of the major contributors to the pollution.
Our Earth
Plastic grocery bags profoundly impact our environment. It takes over 100 years, and I don’t mean dog years, for one plastic bag to decompose.

“Paws Against Pollution”®
Pawsby is recruiting his pals to join “Paws Against Pollution." Pals are dog walkers, kids and adults,
environmentalists and community groups who share the same message, “Please Be Responsible.” Pick up your dog’s waste from our streets and public spaces and dispose of it in a responsible recyclable receptacle.
 “Paws Against Pollution” provides current information about the hazards of unattended dog waste to include:
• Personal health and hygiene
• Public health and aesthetics
• Pollution impacting our beaches, lakes and rivers
• Plastic bags that choke our landfills
• Waste stream management of dog waste out of our general landfills
“Paws Against Pollution” delivers a message to our cities and municipalities that responsible dog guardians are collecting their dog’s waste, and now there is also a need for communities to promote the use of biodegradable bags for collection and to waste stream manage collected dog waste to green landfills.
So What’s a Dog to Do?
I, Pawsby, plan to become the identifiable symbol of responsible dog guardianship, the new, much better looking Smokey the Bear of the dog waste business. I plan to replace the plastic grocery bag as the visible symbol of a dog lover’s commitment and responsibility to his dog, his neighbor and the environment and would like to introduce you to:
